If you are over 50 (60, 70, and beyond), do you keep blaming mistakes you make, names you forget, and your seeming limitations on your age?!
Are you complaining about having "senior" moments?
In my teens and 20s, I often forgot people's names within a minute after being introduced to them. Was I having a "senior" moment at such a young age?
I think not.
STOP! Cease blaming your age for any missteps you make!
All you are doing is digging your own aging hole by reinforcing negative stereotypes and assumptions.
Although our bodies change over the years as we evolve from infancy to adulthood, I think many of the negative experiences we may have as we "grow in years" (I stole that term from spiritual author Carole Dore!) are caused by long and deeply-held conventional beliefs.
We "expect" to slow down. We "expect" to "forget" as the years go by.
But, just because these beliefs have lasted through the ages doesn't mean they are true!
Over 50 years ago (in 1969), spiritual author Russell Kemp published Live Youthfully Now in which he postulated that time itself has no power to age or define us. He shares powerful stories of "older" individuals who did not let the fact that they were in their 80s, 90s, and even 100 stop them from being active and mentally sharp. And he gives suggestions on how you can begin to "de-age."
Granted, there are no guarantees in life, and we cannot control absolutely everything. But I believe we can optimize our chances of living "youthfully" throughout our lives. We must reject conventional wisdom and be proactive in specific activities to help us maintain a vibrant and healthy body, mind, and spirit.
Kemp's book is well worth reading. You can download a PDF version of it here:
